Quick Tips to Prepare Your Chicagoland Heating System for Winter

As cool weather approaches, it’s important to start thinking about the heating system in your Carol Stream, IL home. Follow these tips to prepare your furnace or heat pump for the season ahead.

Schedule Your Annual Maintenance

For peak efficiency, you should schedule a tune-up for your furnace or heat pump once a year. We recommend doing so in autumn before the cold weather season settles in. This gives you the opportunity to properly prime your heating system for a season of use.

Our maintenance appointments include a thorough 20-point inspection to make sure that your system is in prime condition. If you have a heat pump that’s more than 10 years old or a furnace that’s over 15, you may want to consult with our technicians about preparing for a new installation in the near future as well.

Change Your Furnace Filter

Over time, the filter in your furnace will collect dust, dander, pollen, and other irritants. You should change the filter once every three months at a minimum. In some homes, you may need to change your HVAC filter as often as once a month. Check the filter for visible dirt and dust monthly and make the swap at least quarterly throughout the year. Changing the filter at the beginning of the heating season will help get your system off to a great start.

Adjust the Thermostat

As the weather shifts, so too should your thermostat settings. When you’re using air conditioning in the warm weather months, you want to keep the home as warm as you comfortably can for the best AC efficiency. The opposite is true in winter.

Adjust your thermostat to a cooler temperature. If you have a programmable thermostat, input temperatures that are even lower at night and during any hours when the home is unoccupied.

Contact Oncourse Heating, Cooling, Plumbing for all your heating services. If you’re ready to schedule that tune-up, reach out now.
